Eau Claire Market Announces Closure Plans

Calgary, AB – March 4th, 2024 - Eau Claire Market, an iconic landmark in Downtown Calgary, will officially close its doors on Friday, May 31st, 2024. The building will be handed over to the City of Calgary on June 1st to pave the way for the future Eau Claire Green Line LRT Station.

JOEY Eau Claire and LOCAL Public Eatery will continue to operate, along with a section of the south surface parking lot.

The closure marks the end of an era for Eau Claire Market, which has served as an eclectic hub for shopping, entertainment, and community events since its arrival in 1993. The addition of the future Green Line Station is expected to be a catalyst for the site, supporting Harvard Developments’ plan to transform it into a mixed-use, transit-oriented area that aligns with the growth strategy of Downtown Calgary.

To prepare for station construction, demolition of the Eau Claire Market is anticipated to begin in July and be completed this Fall. With the main construction of Phase 1 of the Green Line on track to begin later in 2024, the site will also be used for construction staging and laydown for the duration of the project.

“As we bid farewell to the Eau Claire Market building, we know it marks the beginning of an exciting new chapter for the area,” says Rosanne Hill Blaisdell, President and CEO of Harvard Developments. "With the City’s recent significant investment in the Eau Claire Plaza and the impact of the Green Line, our redevelopment of this property will result in a vibrant, revitalized place in the heart of downtown.”

Planning of a ‘Farewell Festival’ is underway and will be hosted at Eau Claire Market on Saturday, May 11th. This community event will provide neighbours and citizens with a final opportunity to gather, reminisce and celebrate 30 years of memories made at Eau Claire Market. It is also an opportunity to say thank you to Calgarians for their support and patronage. Further details regarding the Farewell Festival will be announced later this month.

Over the years, Eau Claire Market has been more than just a shopping destination; it has been the backdrop for numerous events and community gatherings. As the host site for the Calgary International Film Festival, Taste of Calgary, Pet-A-Palooza, Canada Day Celebrations, and thousands of cultural performances, the market has left an indelible mark on the city's social and cultural fabric.
